Other NOPL branches

Before Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Public Library had 12 branches open, plus the Main Library. The Main Library, the Nix Branch and the Cita Dennis Hubbell Branch were able to reopen two months after the storm. More are reopening as time goes by.

Algiers Regional Branch
3014 Holiday Drive
Opened in 1966

Katrina damage report:
Copper facade blew off two sides. Wind driven rain destroyed books, computer lab floors and computers. Ceiling tiles fell. Majority of building contents will have to be removed because of mold. Building will have to be gutted. Closed indefinitely.

Alvar Branch

Opened in 1940

Katrina damage report:
Received about a foot of water. Books, furnishings, and computers damaged. Will have to be partially gutted. Closed indefinitely.

Children's Resource Center

Opened in 1908 (was Napoleon Branch)

Katrina damage report:
Two large windows broken. Should be able to reopen after damage is repaired and City gives go-ahead.

Opened in 1907 - renamed in 2002

Katrina damage report:
Broken windows. Should be able to reopen when repairs are complete and the go-ahead is given by the City.

Opened in 1968

Katrina damage report:
Fish in parking lot. Overturned bookdrops. Major flooding. Shelves collapsed, books floated in water. All furniture and equipment damaged. Will have to be partially gutted. Closed indefinitely.

Main Library

Opened in 1960

Katrina damage report:
Broken windows in the computer labs. Keyboards and chairs need to be replaced. Floor on the first level received water damage from the roof and the floors are buckling in some places.

Martin Luther King Branch

Katrina damage report:

Major flooding. Broken door glass. Furniture and books scattered. Wood floors in house buckling. Mold throughout. All furniture equipment and decorations moldy. Will have to be partially gutted. Closed indefinitely.
